A cute pink kitty is playing with the Dreamwidth logo: Come join our celebration of Dreamwidth, April 25th to May 15th.
@3weeks4dreamwidth is celebrating Dreamwidth's anniversary!
Come join in for fun, memes, activities, and more ♥

Today, I'm sharing info about a new community that sounds like fun. [community profile] fanmix_monthly. I love doing fanmixes. I do them for characters, ships, even specific stories I'm working on, so I can listen while I write to set the mood.

They are doing a mini mix meme for the celebration. Description: comment with a fandom, ship, character, theme, etc. prompt and others will reply with a song(s) that remind them of that.

I've always made mine in a media player on my computer (and I had a couple on the now-defunct 8-Tracks site), but I do have one Sonny/Rico playlist here. I should re-create the ones I had on 8-Tracks, too. They were Torchwood, Jack/Ianto.

In recent years, I've been on a mission where I pick a worthy WIP out of many volunteers and finish it. So far I've completed:

That covers my entire output of the last five years, with only one absolutely new fic posted during that time, the 15 sentence fake fake dating Star Trek fic Strange New Worlds, Etc. that I wrote for OTW's 15 year anniversary in 2022.

All of these WIPs were abandoned in various stages of doneness. I do this. Not on purpose, but I start a fic and get thousands of words into it and then either get anxious about it (writing can be a trigger for me, though it's gotten better through careful practice) or life gets in the way and I have to stop working on it and then get scared (anxious) to pick it back up again. But past!me's problems are a boon for present me who doesn't have to come up with ideas and has a bunch of notes for all these stories that can either be used or discarded. And because they've sat for a while, undisturbed, I'm able to work on them almost as if it's someone else's writing that I'm improving. I can kill the darlings that need killing and get on with it.

A Hundred Hundred Bolts of Satin was probably more like two stories when I opened it after a long period away from it. The opening part and the rest of it. I had to stitch the two together, and the opening section was just murdering me before I finally, after a lot of work, figured out which parts were important.

stop. motion. was done and betaed, but Joe Flanigan had gotten a divorce (sorry, Joe) while it was sitting on my hard drive and I wanted to work that in, which changed the tone—and purpose—of the story significantly.

New Year Market was done and had even been through two betas. I had some sentences that were annoying me, so I fixed them, and I am as shocked as you are that it took me less than a month to do that.

Condition Zebra was a complete draft, but I'd finished it in 2013 and never looked at it again. (I wrote it and then Emily died, and these two things were not related, but also were.) It needed a lot of polishing, and I had made Rodney too emotionally mature. So I made Rodney a little messy and John, in a move that surprised me, responded by becoming more emotionally mature. It seemed he'd grown up, too, in the twelve years since I'd written it.

Maybe He's Born With It (Maybe It's GlaxosEpsilonYor) was not as done as I thought it was. Instead of being nearly complete, it was only a couple of paragraphs in the file and then several pages of handwritten story. I transfered the handwritten part to the screen, editing all the while, and then did a bunch of writing to finish it and then lots and lots of revising to get Jim's voice right. This was him after the first movie, still a selfish frat bro, but with the capacity to learn from his mistakes, and I didn't want to quash his worst instincts, but it was hard for me to just let him be the (almost) worst version of himself. I had to keep removing the guardrails I built around him. And his literal voice needed to be way more casual. I got there in the end, though, and in the process learned that this Jim didn't like hedging language, no "just" or "almost" or "kind of"; everything's flat out with him, no room for doubt.

The Feast of St. Olaf (my 60th SGA fanwork!!) was basically a complete story when I opened it up in February. It had all the important parts—a title and a last line; there was just some empty space between a joke (which I did not...get? despite having written it??) and the last sentence. So I erased the joke and just started writing from there. I began this fic for the "blades" square on my [community profile] kink_bingo card in 2011, but as I wrote toward the last sentence I had, using it as a guide, the focus of the story changed. It was no longer just about Ronon being good with knives; it became about loss and memory, a much deeper story. So I reworked the rest of it to match, and in the process the knives were no longer what the Kink Bingo mods refer to as the erotic focus of the story, and I didn't feel like I could add this fic to the Kink Bingo collection. (Sadly, because I adore posting G-rated kinkfic to the chat.)

Many of these WIPs went through similar changes as I finished them. Maybe He's Born With It came from a much lighter idea, less loss, more eye shadow. And stop. motion. lacked an emotional core before I worked Joe's divorce into it. So having these stories sit for a bit between their initial drafting and being completed benefited us both, in many ways. Though I'd honestly prefer if I could finish a story in less than ten years, it also lets me see how much I've grown as a writer, even in the last few years.

Next up is my Star Trek RPF from 2016, an extended version of my little Saturday Morning ficlet. As I recall it's completely finished, though the last scene needs some tweaking as I've never been happy with it. It has a title, but I've never been happy with that, either, and I've got a new one that should work. And of course, anything I haven't seen in ten years is going to need a polish as my writing sensibilities have changed somewhat in those years. I've been putting this one off because it's RPF from 2016, set in 2016, and stuff has changed! And I'm worried about it!! But it's not going to get any younger, and as I keep repeating to myself, it was the canon we had at the time. It's not like I could write it any differently today. Though I guess we'll have a chance to see.

I realise I'm late to begin participating in [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth but I might as well start now. I thought about what I could post about every day (on days that I'm not posting anything else on my journal) and decided on discussing my avatars on Kingdom of Knuffel. Kingdom of Knuffel is a dressup game, virtual pet/adoptables site and forum community rolled into one. You earn points by chatting and raising virtual pets, and spend the points on dressup items for your customisable avatar.

This avatar is my great success. It's titled 'Tea Lime' and it won first place!!! in the May 2022 Monthly Avatar Contest at Kingdom of Knuffel.

Things I'm proud of:
Matching the Stripes and Hearts background with the Heart Cup.
The necklace looks like it's a part of the dress because the pendant sits right at the center of the bow. Speaking of bows, the dress has a bow, as does the hair, as does the avatar's frame. Even the necklace has a tiny bow.
The way I got the green skin with the white face was by using an item called Clown Facepaint on the Peridot Skin. (Otherwise she'd be green from face to torso.) I thought the violet blush looked nice even though there's no violet in the rest of the avatar, so that her face wouldn't be stark, uniform pale.
I chose the Alseid Lips, which I think makes it look like she just blew on her drink or took a sip. It's just the right, trace amount of tiny pucker.

Firing lines

It's that time of year. The first wave of baseball managers ripped from the dugout. Alex Cora (whose little brother Joey was one of my favorite Mariner players ever) got the heave ho from Boston earlier this week. Today the Phillies canned their guy. Boston has won 12 but lost 17. Philly has won 9 and lost 19.

The Mariners have won 14 and lost 16 which isn't great considering they were supposed to be the top dogs this year but also not so terrible that their manager will be fired this week but... maybe... who knows?

And ballparks without roofs should be eliminated from Major League ball.

Volleyball was ok today. At least it wasn't cold.

Today is house cleaning day and I have an Amazon return which I think I'll take while the house cleaner is here.

I dreamed last night that I lost my watch and that my brother adopted a baby goat. Today, I have looked at my wrist a couple of times and been surprised to see the watch is back. Also I have thought of texting my brother to ask what he named the goat. Apparently these dreams were fairly Vivid.

Biggie is begging for breakfast number 2 and I need to get dressed.

Reality TV is declining: "The declines have hit every subgenre, from cooking, design and home shows to travel and crime…There are fewer channels greenlighting fewer shows, and it all seems to be moving unstoppably to the bottom…there are no new shows right now." The article reports a large number of people leaving the industry.

Which shows would you miss if they ended? What shows do you wish would be produced?

Wreckporter Adria P. found all of today's cakes in the same bakery, on the same day. And since I know how tempting it is for you optimists to think most of the wrecks here are once-in-a-lifetime flukes, I figured this would be an excellent way for me to break out my "I-Told-You-So" dance. (Which is a lot like my "I-Have-To-Pee-And-We're-Out-Of-TP" dance, but with more jazz hands.) Because people need to realize that the bakery world is a mess, and I just need to rule it.

[adjusting goggles]

But first, let's take a look at the average daily fare in this Fine Establishment:

Bad Horse after some really spicy black bean enchiladas.

("Dibs on the festering pile of black goo!")

(PRO TIP: "Festering" makes everything funnier.)

(Unless the thing is on you, of course. Then, less so. To you. The rest of us will still think it's funny.)

The return of the gnarly poop fingers...OF DOOM.

I'd also like to point out that Adria sent these in yesterday, and it's April. Is this like a Christmas in July thing? Halloween in April? And why are the flying orange sea urchins attacking the poop fingers, anyway? Do they always hunt in packs? Do they have shrill little battle cries? I bet they do. I bet they sound like Angry Birds when you successfully complete a level. Only....EVILER. Like, a-letter-of-condemnation-from-the-deputy-mayor evil.

This one actually isn't that bad, comparatively speaking. I mean, I'm not sure how the yellow stuff got dripped on so precisely, or why the Bat logo looks like a battle axe, or what natural ailment would cause an otherwise sane person to think those borders are acceptable for anyone over the age of three, BUT...

...nope, I have nothing to add to that. Never mind.

And my personal favorite:

"Candy From a Baby"

AKA

"How much can we insult our customers' intelligence before they stop shelling out $14.98 for this crap? At least this much. MUAH-HA-HAA! AHAHAAAAHA! Ahah."

Seriously, I love how even the attempt at any kind of decoration has been abandoned. One blobby squirt of a bottom line + finger smeared topping = DONE. And that's about standards, you know?

[poking cake]

Smells like cumin. Huh.

Thanks again to Adria for singing along.

Revisiting My 2012 Reading List

Since I started posting my book log challenge lists, it’s been bothering me that I never posted the lists for years 2012, 2013, and 2014. I’ve decided to correct this, starting today with 2012.

You may notice that this list includes multiple entries for Frances Hodgson Burnett and Rosemary Sutcliff. In subsequent lists I decided that I could include each author only once per year, having realized that otherwise repeat author names might clog up the lists for ages.

Frances Hodgson Burnett - Editha’s Burglar

Franny Billingsley - The Robber Girl

Rosemary Sutcliff - The Chronicles of Robin Hood

Lisa See - Lady Tan’s Circle of Women

John Scalzi - Starter Villain

Rosemary Sutcliff - The Iliad. I never reviewed this book (or its companion The Odyssey. They had gorgeous illustrations by Alan Lee but otherwise were very standard retellings.

Frances Hodgson Burnett - The Cozy Lion. Didn’t review this one either. A bit of fluff.

Rosemary Sutcliff - The Odyssey

Elizabeth Wein - Cobalt Squadron

serein

serein (suh-RAN) or (rare/obs.) serene (suh-REEN) - n., a fine rain falling from an apparently clear sky, esp. after sunset.

This was, formerly, the supposed source of dew. The phenomenon is more common in tropical climates than temperate, and possible explanations include the cloud evaporating as it condenses the raindrops and the rain being blown from elsewhere. We got the word in the 1860s from French, from Middle French serain, evening/nightfall, from hypothetical Vulgar Latin form *sērānum, from Latin sērum, a late hour, neuter of sērus, late -- though note that this etymology is complicated by the nearby existence of serene meaning untroubled (from Latin serēnus, clear/cloudless).

For Fandom Trumps Hate this year, I offered to record podfic. The winner of my auction requested podfic that was:

  • for the BeefLeaf ship for Tian Guan Ci Fu
  • 5-10k words long
  • had a happy or hopeful ending

And I am having a little trouble finding such a fic that the author has given permission for people to make podfic for.

If anyone has any recommendations, that would be very helpful. (And self recommendations are more than welcome!)
