Willow Cuttings
Mar. 2nd, 2026 03:18 pmWillow is a keystone plant, supporting many other species. Early blooms feed bees. Birds like to nest in willows. Many species of insects, especially butterfly and moth larvae, feed on them. They also make great craft materials and, as mentioned above, spew out rooting hormones.

Mar. 2nd, 2026 03:44 pmThe Romancing McShep 2026 collection
With 48 entries (including all the chocolate box postcards) and an ongoing WIP, there's plenty to keep your fannish heart busy.
Thank you, everyone, for making this McShep fest work for one more go around.

Just like a bad plot, I won't tell you why
Mar. 2nd, 2026 03:29 pmAs of the start of the month, I seem to have had over a hundred-dollar drop in my Patreon membership without any notification of a mass die-off in subscriptions. Any suggestions on interpreting this deficit would be appreciated since it is my only steady source of income at the moment and we are so broke.
I am still feeling in something of a mental blast crater about the news. I have spent my afternoon on the phone.

Mar. 2nd, 2026 08:21 pmTwo reading groups - one in person, one online - on consecutive days - plus various assorted frazzlements - has left me not feeling like coming up with the wonted witty badinage and repartee to delight dr rdrz.
(Who said 'What witty badinage and repartee'???)
Moderately entertaining coincidence: RL book group was being hosted in a part of London in which (lightly disguised) work discussed in online group takes place (snarked at by the author). I suspect it has changed Quite A Lot since those days....

Talking of London: Square Mile strikes back: how the City of London is fighting disinformation about crime. I discover from that that we have a Lady Mayor of London, and upon further research, she is not even the first woman to hold the office but the first to take the style of Lady Mayor, go her.

Do we not find it annoying when academic publishers do not reveal, until you have actually made a purchase, that their ebooks can only be consumed via their walled-garden app? In this particular instance at least the work was open-access and I had not taken a loss except in the expenditure of time in the process. But really. If you are offering your product as a ebook, I think this should be made clear from the outset.

Birdfeeding
Mar. 2nd, 2026 01:51 pmI fed the birds. I've seen a flock of sparrows and a male cardinal.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 3/2/26 -- I transplanted snowdrops from the parking lot to the white garden.
EDIT 3/2/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
I set up a label with the new Sharpie Oil Paint Pen (Extra Fine) and took pictures.
I saw a squirrel in the trees.

Writing Patterns Meme
Mar. 2nd, 2026 01:44 pmUnceremonious yoink from Tumblr because we're feeling it today. Last time I did this was in 2024 over on tumblr, and that was 37 fics and almost 35k words ago. So I'm curious to see if anything's changed, or I'm staying consistent. I've included my first lines from 2024 as a comparison to today's first lines.

What have we learned?
So last time, I said that I thought my overall pattern was that each opening line kind of set the scene and overall tone of the fic. And I'm not sure I can say the same for this batch of opening lines.
Here's the thing: In context, they do. They are all the foundations upon which the rest of the fic is built upon, and I don't think the rest of the opening would hit the same without them. So what's the difference between 2024 and now? Some quick observations:
- stars in your eyes and Mandevilla sat in my Scrivener file for a couple years before being posted. And to me, those ones match the 2024 openers the most. One fic is humor, the other is fluff, and it's pretty obvious which is which from those lines alone in my opinion. What you see is what you get.
- Overall, my opening lines have gotten shorter. I also think it's notable that one of the longer 2026 opening lines belongs to the Lord of the Rings inspired fic, so there was a very specific vibe I was trying to capture there
- These openers are more action-oriented. A character or some part of the setting is actively doing something. 2024 had more narrator-style set-up lines. Had softer imagery. Had character desires front and center. In some ways, they had more variety.
But: the 2026 list has shorter fics - Hand in hand and Kissing Prayers are only 200 words, and different from before is only 300. In total, 6/10 are under 1k. By contrast, 7/10 of 2024's openers belong to fics over 1k, 3 of which are around or above 2k. I didn't start dabbling in true drabbles until the end of 2024. So, it makes sense that I'd use shorter, more active openers in shorter fics. And there are many paths to tread is actually a great example for a longer fic opener for me because it clocks in at 1500 words (not including it's appendix of flower language), and it wouldn't look wholly out of place from the 2024 openers.
So I think it's less I've changed my writing style, and more that I've been writing shorter fics again/being more comfortable posting "fresher" fics. Two drabbles of the 2026 list were Discord prompt responses that I just tweaked a bit and tossed up mostly as is because why not? <- Not a thing that happened in the past. I also suspect that picking up more hobbies- like coding, graphics making, reading more, etc. - means I have less time or attention span going towards writing. So the fics that get finished tend to be the shorter ones I knock out in a single session.
I do want to get into a better habit of writing everyday because I do have longer ideas and WIPs that I want to post. Maybe next time I do this I'll have a bunch of multi-chapters fics to look at and go "Well why I did I start doing that?!" XD

🎬 January-February Movies Wrap-up
Mar. 2nd, 2026 01:12 pm
Greenland ('20): It's weird that I had not heard/seen this before but ah well. There were a couple of extremely tense moments. I feel like there was a lack of urgency in some scenes from background characters. Not the most original movie but I will definitely watch the second one to see what happens to them down the line. 3/5 stars
10.0 Earthquake ('14): Ah, I've seen this. I'm getting tired of family drama disaster movies. And the daughter with a gross love interest/friend. It had a few good points though. 2/5
Night of the Reaper ('25): The twist did manage to surprise me a little, probably because I'm not one to try to figure things out on my own, but it made sense, although the killer reveal should've been a flashback when she said 'I followed you after the funeral'. Would watch again. 4/5?
The Invitation ('15): Guy and his girlfriend along with their old friends are invited to the house he used to live in with his wife and kid until he died in an accident and she cheated on the guy with someone at her grief meetings. Come to find out, the ex-wife and her new boyfriend are in a cult together and acting strange. Turns out they almost poisoned them all to death. Not sure if it was going to be a murder/suicide or if they were just going for the friends. I ended up skimming after a certain point.
Aquamarine ('06): I've seen this movie on lists with stuff like She's the Man etc as ~cultural relics~ so i figured I should watch it lol, Two absolutely boy crazy girls encounter a mermaid who has to prove love exists to her father or be forced into an arranged marriage. They teach her through magazines like Cosmopolitan how to attract one guy in particular. Contains bad acting at times and plenty of cringe situations. 😂 I like the thing with Bonnie and Leonard. It has the whole 'true love can be platonic' thing like Frozen. You know what, I did enjoy this , can't resist 'friendship is love', 'people aren't always what you expect' not to mention 'parents are people too'. => I only sorta knew one song. I feel like I would rewatch it. 4/5 stars
Coherence ('13): I know you're supposed to be confused but I prefer a more clean-cut ending. 2/5 stars
Quest for Camelot ('98) (rewatch) - Man, why wasn't that Ruber cut off the second he started being nasty. The music lyrics for the Camelot song were so straightforward. XD I don't understand what killed Lionel, was it the fall itself? Does the horn sounding only mean 'Excalibur has been stolen'? What do they do if Camelot is being attacked? Turns out I remembered "I Stand Alone" really well! There are plenty of references in this movie including Star Wars. Overall had a great time, I look forward to rewatching more animated movies!

Check-In Post - March 2nd 2026
Mar. 2nd, 2026 06:52 pmHello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.
Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?
There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.
This Week's Question: What is a craft that you tried but abandoned?
If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.
I now declare this Check-In OPEN!
Chat corner, dressed up (or down)
Mar. 2nd, 2026 07:32 pmHi everyone,
I'm here with the weekly chat post. Something to share? (I really loved all the pet comments last week, by the way.)
~ ~ ~
Okay, hmm... I haven't done anything Star Wars-y lately. I did seriously consider wearing my SW sweatpants to work today, though! (Laundry organization failure. Again. I am a functional adult.) Do you have any SW-themed clothing? Merch, cosplay, casual cosplay, something else?
Fleeting reunions
Mar. 2nd, 2026 06:26 pmI had a little run of "brief meetings with old hockey friends" in the last two weekends. A few words, a hug, sometimes just a wave in passing while we both briefly occupied the same ice rink. All of them put a smile on my face.
Saturday before last was the Varsity matchup between Oxford Vikings A and Cambridge Narwhals at Cambridge rink, before my Kodiaks 2 team played visiting team Invicta Dynamics. Three of my tournament buddies from Biarritz were on the Vikings team. The next day Kodiaks were away at Bristol. I had an expected brief chat with my friend C from Hull camp but also complete surprise appearances from M who coaches Hull camp and goalie J, both of whom are tournament buddies. M was there with the away team for the previous game, J now lives in Bristol, which I theoretically knew but had forgotten.
Saturday just gone I had an evening game in Peterborough with Warbirds. I arrived a bit early and saw the previous game in progress: Phantoms Dev women were playing Streatham Storm Dev (my first ever hockey team). I recognised the jerseys first, and then a bunch of the faces. I dumped my kit in the changing room and went to lurk next to their bench and cheer them on for their last ten minutes. The timing worked out for me to see the end of their game (they won!) and walk with them back to their changing room before I needed to join Warbirds in ours.
