I'm Worried About Zara

Ugh. Feeling arthritis-y. Need to go to sleep.

Got up at 6:30 AM. Bella did her business quickly, so I decided to go back to sleep for an hour and shower at lunch. I overslept work an hour. Suckage.

Today is Friday, right? This week has been a blur.

I found a propane heater in case the power goes out in winter, but I need to think about how much money I want to spend on something that might never happen. (I could use it for camping though. Speaking of camping, I have the down sleeping bag for if the power goes out, but that won't help the critters.) On the other hand, this area has a danger of ice storms because we’re far enough south that snow can turn to freezing rain. And hmm, the food supplies would help being snowed in.

Fed everyone and took Bella and Gracie outside. It’s hot out (90F/32C). I think that I need to stop feeding Gracie kibble because it seems to give her loose stools. I'd have to feed her another can of wet food. Showered and put on shorts and a t-shirt and sandals.

Hmm. I should order some tubs in which to keep emergency supplies, but I should wait until I get them to see what size I need.

Medium doesn't allow you to make money off of AI-generated text, so I need to rewrite the blog entries. In that case, I might have to wait until retirement. We'll see. I am so busy right now. Maybe I could work on some in my hotel room at night during my trip. Or at the airport.

I have a strong urge to go back to Hawaii, to Maui, but it won't happen anytime soon. Plus, I want to wait until Lahaina is rebuilt. I wonder how long that will take. Maybe I should check out Molokai? That would be a nice sleepy place for "R&R". You have to take a commuter airline from Oahu or Maui to Molokai. I found a flight that I like. Hmm, should I go to Molokai next year? It would have to be a short trip because I will be taking a lot of time for my European trip in the fall. I was going to go see my dad though. Hum. I have three weeks of vacation and two personal holidays right now. I'll take two weeks in Italy and a day or two in January at the end of my cruise. I need to figure out how much time I'll take for the European trip (how many extra days I want to stay in Paris and Istanbul). I have airfare that I need to use up before mid-June. (Too bad that I already booked the flights for the cruise. But part of it was from the flight that I didn't take earlier this year after the full cruise.)

Oh. I forgot to mention that I bought a second travel vest the other day because I wear mine all the time for the pockets. They're very useful. I have a burgundy one and the new one is black.

Hmm. Do I want to go work downstairs now? It's 93F/34C and kind of miserable upstairs. Luckily, I'm not doing anything that requires two monitors.

Oh no. David Gergen died. I liked him on CNN. He was a presidential advisor that became a political commentator.

Bella is so jealous. If Oliver or Gracie jumps on my lap, Bella jumps on my lap (well, as much of her that will fit), chases them off, and kisses me. "I am YOUR DOG! And don't forget it!"

Zara didn’t eat most of her food (which is concerning), so I gave her food to Oliver and Lily. First Bella jumped up with her paws on the counter. I made her get down. Then Gracie jumped up. I made her get down. Then they both jumped up in unison, and I cracked up. I told them that they were dorks. I got Oliver and Lily to sort of share by moving the dish around so that Lily could get some food.

I ordered some dog DNA tests for Bella and Gracie. The results should be interesting.

One of the things that I need to do this weekend is find the chicken wire so that I can plug the gaps in the fence and let Gracie run around. She’s small enough that she could get out, and I don’t trust her to come back like Bella does.

I’ve added seeing the giant rubber duck that [personal profile] one_raido wrote about to my bucket list. Waukegan this year would be doable except that I’ll be in Italy. Sorry not sorry. I’ll have to bookmark its Web site. They should bring it to Chicago (if they haven’t already).

I started going through Amazon boxes. My emergency supplies are starting to arrive. Some will also work for camping, such as wipes to use in lieu of a shower. I got my weather radio and have set it up for alerts in my bedroom.

Note to self: go through my travel chargers this weekend and order anything that I need. Also check on my travel adapters and transfer them to my medium suitcase. I have my travel pillow and sleep mask, but I ordered a second sleep mask in case I lose one on the plane like I did on my last trip to Italy. Pack my swimsuits (or do I want to go swimming before I leave?)

Oh good. I’m yawning. I want to get to bed early so that I can get out early to do some weeding and planting.

Shit. Zara isn't eating at all. I'm really worried. The vet gave me some appetite enhancers, but I was going to crush the pills and mix them in her food. I wonder if she would take one mixed with a Churu. I also ordered some pill pockets, but I remember in the past that she would eat the pill pocket and spit out the pill. I'll call the vet on Monday if I can't get her to eat.

A Brief History of Montmaray - Michelle Cooper

Continued my nostalgic re-reads of formative 2000s YA with A Brief History of Montmaray by Michelle Cooper, a novel about the impoverished, eccentric royal family of a very small island - think Gibraltar, but legally independent, mostly abandoned, and on the other side of Spain? - in the years before WWII, in the form of the diary of 16-year-old princess Sophia FitzOsborne. (I only realized years after originally reading this how much it owes to Dodie Smith's I Capture The Castle, which I've still never actually read.) This holds up delightfully, although it feels almost embarrassingly self-indulgent, in terms of realizing how precisely it's calibrated to appeal to a certain type of teenage girl and how precisely I was part of that target audience, which might be best described as "former American Girl and Dear America girlies." (And, I suspect, Samantha girlies in particular?) Like, it's just sooo.... she's an orphan living in a crumbling castle (with secret tunnels, a slightly unhinged housekeeper, and possibly ghosts) on an isolated island! She feels herself the too-ordinary middle child among her more talented/charming/outrageous/etc. siblings and cousins, but she's our protagonist, of course she has hidden depths! Plot threads include Sophie's crush on slightly older family friend Simon,* whether to move to London to be Presented Into Society as her aunt insists,** and the looming specter of real-world 1930s geopolitics— the boiling-pot build-up to, you know, WWII - a reference to the fascist sympathies of the British upper class in one of Sophie's brother's letters here, a piece of news there - is chilling, but things get dramatic very quickly when two lost German "historians" (or so they claim) wash ashore.

Book review: "The Tyrant Baru Cormorant"

Today I finished the latest book in the Baru Cormorant series (fourth book remains to-be-released), The Tyrant Baru Cormorant. Y'all, Baru is so back.

! Spoilers for books 1 & 2 below !

If you've looked at other reviews for the series, you may have seen book 2, The Monster Baru Cormorant, referred to as the series' "sophomore slump." I disagree, but I understand where the feeling comes from. The Monster feels like a prelude, a setting of the board, for The Tyrant. The Monster puts all the pieces in place for the cascade of schemes and plays that come in The Tyrant. They almost feel like one book split into two (which is fair—taken together, they represent about a thousand pages and would make for one mammoth novel).

If you felt like Baru was too passive in The Monster and that there wasn't enough scheming going on, I can happily report those things are wholly rectified in The Tyrant. Having located the infamous and quasi-mythological Cancrioth at the end of The Monster, Baru wastes no time in whipping into full savant plotting mode.

The Friday Five for 11 July 2025/Just Wondering

Anais_pf posted in thefridayfive:

This week's questions were suggested by silent_r_infork.

1. What was the most sick that you've ever been?

2. What disease are you afraid of getting?

3. Are you a big baby when it comes to taking medicine/shots for your illnesses?

4. Is going to the doctor really THAT bad?

5. Would you have the flu twice a month if you were paid $1,000 for having it?

1. Easy. That would be when I had Covid before we knew what Covid was. I got it in November and I thought I was going to die. I’d never run a fever like that before or after. All the other times I’ve caught it (four to date) have been a walk in the park compared to that one.

2. Cancer. Really don’t want cancer.

3. Nope. Not in the least.

4. Nope. I go every six months.

5. That would be a hard pass. I don’t need the money that badly…

My Worldcon Schedule

The Worldcon programming schedule is out and I'm on a number of interesting panels.

Wed Aug 13 - Horrible Histories: A Way to Make Learning about History Fun (Room 343-344)

A discussion about shows, podcasts, and other media that help make learning about history fun. After all, it isn’t just lists of numbers and names! How do you take that dry text and make it engaging enough to reach an audience that isn’t necessarily interested in history?

Thu Aug 14 - Medieval Characters—Women Authors (Room 420-422)

A look at the legacy and influence of Marjorie Kemp, Christine de Pisan, Marie de France, Hildegard of Bingen, the anchorite Julian of Norwich, and more. Their works continue to have relevance today.

Fri Aug 15 - Conlangs 101: How to Get Started Making Your Own Language (Room 322)

Building language goes beyond just putting funny sounds together or making a word that looks cool. Learn what’s needed to make a basic constructed language and how to find the resources and tools to get started in language creation.

Plus autographing on Fri Aug 15 at noon, a (limited attendance) table talk on Sun Aug 17 at 9am and...

Hugo Awards Ceremony - Sat Aug 16 (time TBA) where I will be trying not to chew too hard on my fingernails as I wait for the Best Related Work category to come up.

Looking for a festivids fan video from 2010

So, I am looking for a fanvid made for festivids for “Snow White: a Tale of Terror” called “Bare your Teeth” using Lady Gaga’s teeth by vidder e- transitions back in 2010.

I seem to remember having accessed it either through YouTube or Vimeo at some point but all of the old links I have found link to a download on the vidder’s personal website, which no longer exists.

I’m hoping for a link or if someone had downloaded it at some point and still has it, I would be forever grateful.

[Daf Yomi] Maseches Avoda Zara, perek 1 - Lifnei Eideihen

Fun with idolatry and "I'm doing Avoda Zara" jokes! The perek ended yesterday but RL is being busy.

The absolute requisite note on Avoda Zara is one that gets stressed constantly, which is that this is referring specifically to the religious groups amongst whom the tanaim and amoraim were living, and only them. Among the reasons the commentators have said this for a long time is 1) actual real differences between the avoda zarah described in the mishna/gemara and the goysche practices they lived amongst, combined with 2) because if they kept to all of this, there would be many practical problems, because they were a lot more interconnected by that time and working in specific professions, and 3) the outside world thinks it gets a say in Jewish religious texts and would be violently offended if this refers to them.

But definitely there were times when dealing with Artscroll commentary when I had to snap and actually look up when the Meiri lived, and it's like, ah, 13th century France, I understand completely.

From the Ashes

The Eye seeks balance.

Male channelers have the Dragon; females, the Phoenix. Each is the complement of the other. Yet never before had they appeared in the same Age—until now.

Twenty-five years before the events in the village of the Two Rivers, a young girl arrived at the gates of Tar Valon. In time, she rose to become the Phoenix—the myth, the legend made flesh. The Aes Sedai rejoiced, sensing the rebirth of their order in her presence. But on the day of Ajah selection, Rhiannon defied tradition. She rejected the White Tower’s rigid laws and ancient divisions and fled, never to return.

Now, with Lanfear freed from her bonds by Ishamael, and herself apparently stilled, Moiraine Sedai knows there is only one person capable of keeping Rand al’Thor alive—and teaching him the true depths of the One Power.

The Prophecies of the Dragon

Posted by blumentopf999

by

There is a golden bonfire somewhere outside London, built at the central meadow of a luxurious retreat with ten bungalows and a main house, and only about 50 people know it exists.
People clad in red robes stitched with golden dragons curling down the sleeves dance around it. Wine sloshes in crystal cups glittering like frozen starlight in hands as the gathered whirl round and round the giant stack of burning firewood as sparks dance upward, licking at the dark sky above.
Siuan does not dance, she keeps to the edge of the gathering, but has put on a red cardigan to keep to the theme. She observes, rather than participates.
According to Moiraine, the red clothing stands for the blood the Dragon Reborn will spill on the stone of Shayol Ghul when he defeats the Dark One and saves the world.

Or: Moiraine and Siuan meet in every life and try to get it right somehow. Another one of those lives happens to involve a cult in modern-day Great Britain worshipping the Dragon Reborn.

#1 Nominations clarifications

Happy time zone, everyone, and thank you for all the delicious nominations so far. We have such a great start to our exchange already! There were just a few nominations we wanted to clarify.

Disambiguate Nominations
As a reminder, please disambiguate your nominations so that they are accepted into the tagset in a timely manner.

/Reader Nominations
We are not accepting "/reader" nominations. We encourage anyone who nominated a "/reader" nomination to update their nomination to another pairing they may be interested in or nominate a pairing with "/original character" instead of "/reader", so they don't lose their nomination slot.

Relationship tags
Kal-El (Absolute Superman)/Bruce Wayne - Can the nominator please clarify if this was meant to be put under 'Batman - All Media Types' or would it fit better under 'Crossover Fandom'?

the unisex or gender-inclusive versions of all those male-only prompt tags - Please only nominate specific relationships you are interested in. We understand a lot of our Original Works are M/M ships at the time, but this is based on what nominations the participants have submitted. If you're interested in another gender combination, please nominate that under original works as the specific relationship.

Bhunivelze-Hope/Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII) - This was nominated under 'Final Fantasy Series'. Would this be better suited under Final Fantasy XIII? Could the nominator please clarify this for us.

Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier, Johnny Storm/Victor Von Doom, Peter Parker/Wade Wilson, Reed Richards/Victor von Doom, Susan Storm/Victor von Doom - These were nominated under Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom tag. Is that correct or should it be switched to Marvel, Marvel (Comics) or Crossover Fandom?

Freeform tags
Linux User Convinces Stubborn Windows User to Switch to Linux - We don't see a clear enemies to lovers aspect here. Could you please rephrase it?

rights activist mermaid/ignorant fisherman
Younger Black Sheep of the Family Who Is Constantly Belittled/Popular Older Family Member Hiding a Secret
Murderer Revolting Against the System/Goody Two-Shoes Liberal Trying to Reform the System from the Inside by Being Nice
- Please submit these nominations as relationships under the appropriate fandom (likely original work), rather than as freeform tags.

Alternate Universe - Royalty
Alternate Universe - Soulmates
Arranged Marriage
Consensual Underage Sex
Dubiously Consensual Blow Jobs
Fairy Tale Elements
Femdom
From Sex to Love
Mythology
rapist pov
Self-Esteem Issues
Underage Sex - Freeform

- Please add clarifications to these tags to make them specific to enemies to lovers. We do not accept general freeform tags for this exchange and they must apply specifically to the enemies to lovers theme.

Thank you for taking the time to help us with the tag set clarification, and we're so excited to see what wonders come from this exchange!

my formerly empty freezer

As I written about here about a million times, the food scheme at the cult involves my getting an allowance of $600 on the 10th of every month. It does not roll over. So I have to eat $600 worth a month or lose it.

This is designed to be more or less one meal a day. Breakfast is $15 Lunch is $16 and Dinner ranges from $16 to $28. Once in a blue moon I have one of their lunches and one of their dinners (like today, probably) but more often, I skip entirely. This is mostly because their portions are generous and I have so many leftovers.

I have, in past months, trended towards skipping early on and then madly trying to cash in later. But, now I have a new plan. I'm going to strike when the iron is hot. Next week's menus do not look enticing. This week's teriyaki is still great so today I placed 6 orders. I ate one and put 5 in the freezer.

So now I have $502 and 26* days to eat it. So my spreadsheet says I have to eat more than $19 every day. See the problem!? It's so not easy living in the lap of luxury. *They serve brunch on Sunday but I never eat it.

The dinner buffet looks good tonight so that will help.

Also I went to Safeway and got ice cream and some other frozen stuff. So now my freezer is packed to the gills. Which is perfectly fine.
