One thing I love, though, is your insertion of random details such as the fellow whistling "Hall of the Mountain King." It's not important information, per se, but the randomness of the comment, and others like it, lends a fascinating tension to the story. It's like a bee buzzing by in the middle of a wedding. Do I pay attention or not? Very effective.
